History

Originally known as IEEE Workshop on Signal Propagation on Interconnects, the first two editions of the SPI workshop were held in Travemünde, Germany, in 1997 and 1998, before moving to Titisee-Neustadt and Magdeburg. The 2001 edition marked a change, as it was the first time the workshop was held outside Germany, taking place in Venice, Italy. The subsequent editions alternated between Germany and Italy, and from 2008 onwards, France, Belgium and Portugal have been added to the venues list.

In what was a significant step, the 2012 edition in Sorrento, Italy, introduced a shift in the workshop’s scope, with the modification of Signal Propagation on Interconnects to the more inclusive Signal and Power Integrity. This change mirrored the evolution of the high-speed electronics field itself, since in modern electronic systems Signal Integrity (SI) is inseparably linked to Power Integrity (PI).

In its kernel, the event’s identity is shaped by multiple elements that collectively define its enduring success. First, combining high-quality peer-reviewed technical content with a rigorous publication process in the IEEE Xplore® Digital Library, which solidifies its academic credibility. Second, maintaining an in-person format from its inception, a deliberate choice to maximize personal interactions and networking among attendees. Third, ensuring a rich technical program, complemented by vibrant social events that strengthen a sense of community. And finally, actively fostering the next generation of researchers on the SPI field, by promoting a Best Student Paper Award and Student Travel Grants.

Overall, the continuity of the SPI workshop series is an unequivocal testament to its sustained relevance in a rapidly evolving technical field, and a clear indication of an effective formula that keeps driving excellence and innovation in Signal and Power Integrity.
